Class actions also known as a class-action lawsuits, class suits, or representative actions, are a type of lawsuit where one of the parties is a group of people who are represented collectively by a member or members of that group.
Class actions originated in the United States and remain a predominantly U.S. phenomenon, but Canada, as well as several European countries as well as Australia with civil law, have made changes in recent years to allow individuals heading a group or class of similarly-affected persons to bring claims on behalf of the "class".
